Anastasia | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Susan Wloszczyna USA Today Flawed but not fatally, this ambitious epic's strength lies not just with its haunting melodies, pretty pictures, star voices and kid-friendly sidekicks... What gives Anastasia its edge is that most elusive of ingredients, an emotionally gripping script. Adam O The good: boisterous musical numbers with ornate animation, a great real-life plot story to adapt and immortalize in film, and a fairly keen eye for turn-of-century Russian and European styles in set designs, landscapes, costumes, etc. I am a sucker for hand drawn animation, I admire the extra work it takes, and there is obviously a lot of work in this. The bad: for a hand-drawn film, the mixed use of rotoscoping is nauseating. Our damsel-in-distress and knight-in-shining armor are almost entirely rotoscoped for lifelike animation whereas his conniving accomplice is drawn with Disney-esque "inbetweening" that make him seem amorphous. Side-by-side, it's hard to bear. The script is thin and there are a number of incidental characters, and only a few characters whom we follow actually are dynamic, which makes it harder to pull the story together. The ugly: Rasputin's depiction was overly macabre for a children's movie. The sinuous hand and ribcage was nauseating and I had to calm my reaction to explain what was happening for the kids.I would guess it's worth watching if you're intrigued by the story as I am, but it lands solidly middle to low in many lists. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/15/24 Full Review Joel H Anastasia is probably the best non-Disney Disney movie out there. The animation, the musical numbers, the all-star cast, and the humor all mimic the style of Disney movies of the 90s. And while there many aspects of this movie that I enjoy, one of the weakest links in the chain is the voice acting. At times, it’s as if I can see Meg Ryan, John Cusack, and Christopher Lloyd reading their lines in a recording booth instead of Anastasia, Dimitri, and Rasputin speaking with each other. And while Anastasia is far from realistic, it’s a good introduction to the fascinating true story of the Romanov family. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review Derek L 20th Century Fox's animated Anastasia is such a magical journey from start to finish that almost eclipses the magic of Disney animation. The plot and story was very well written, along with the engaging characters that were carried out by its talented cast. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/30/23 Full Review Justice T This movie is so infesting. Overall I really like it but boy are there some pacing problems! If you can look past some odd creative decisions I think the movie works. I love the music ever so much! Has some great character development too!
